IPD exporters from Egypt and Tunisia visiting German and Dutch importers

Establishing contacts – presenting products – talking sales – this formed the focus of the Selling Mission to which IPD invited three Egyptian and two Tunisian suppliers to Europe. The exporters have been given the opportunity to present their products to interested importers from Germany and the Netherlands. Therefore, IPD has previously arranged meetings with suitable buyers.

Within five days, the international delegation has visited ten companies and presented their range of nuts and dried fruits in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, Amsterdam and other cities. The Egyptians particularly brought cashew cornels and dates as well as a wide range of different date products. The Tunisian on the other side encountered great interest with their organic certified products, including dried pomegranate seeds, dates and various date products. Both exporters and the visited importers have been very pleased with the outcome of the individually arranged B2B meetings.

“The personal visit to our company allowed us to comprehensively communicate our needs and requirements to the suppliers without any pressure of time. Thanks to the pre-selection of IPD, we can also be sure that the suppliers are reliable trade partners”, concludes Michael Hebendanz, CEO of Delphi Organic GmbH.

Furthermore, both sides praised the very suitable matchmaking conducted by IPD. Due to the carefully selected exporters, their product range coincided with the actual demand of the buyers. Thus the participants have been able to exchange their experiences directly and negotiate in a targeted manner. The basis for a long-term relationship has been build!

Fast-growing timber from Indonesia showcased at interzum 2017

Bonn, May 22nd, 2017 – Indonesian fast-growing timber is significantly lighter than local timber species, its cultivation helps preserve the natural forests and its import is zero risk with respect to the EUTR. And its use for construction, furniture and interior works has been constantly increasing. This trend has been confirmed at interzum 2017, the world's leading trade fair for furniture production and interior design, at which six Indonesian lightweight timber exporters have successfully presented their products.

Important volumes of the lightweight species Balsa, Albasia and Jabon are being planted by Indonesian small-scale farmers, therewith reforesting damaged areas. The big advantage: these lightweight timber species grow up to five times faster than spruce does in Europe – the tropical climate in Indonesia allows for constant growth.
On the other hand, the European industry can take advantage of the outstanding characteristics of Indonesian lightweight timber. A closet made from these species has only half of the weight compared to one made from spruce; shelves are less vulnerable to deformation due to empty weight; and lightweight timber block boards weigh only 50 percent of particle boards.
The success of the Indonesian participation in interzum 2017 confirms the growing importance of low weight solutions in for construction, furniture and interior works. The Indonesian pavilion saw many visitors that wanted to learn more about the six exporters which offered a wide range of products, from doors for interior and exte-rior use to boards and panels for use in vehicles, ships, for furniture and instru-ments. Their attention had also been caught by the stand construction entirely made from lightweight timber, serving as an example for the multiple use of the material.
The Indonesian exporters at interzum have up to 40 years’ experience in wood processing. Indonesia, which had issued legality certifications based on the “Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu” (SVLK) sine 2013, is also the first country to issue FLEGT licenses for all exports. The competent authorities in Indonesia confirm with these FLEGT licenses the legality of the exported products – which means that importers of FLEGT licensed products do not have to apply the due diligence required by the European Timber Regulation (EUTR).
The Indonesian participation in interzum has been initiated by the Import Promotion Desk (IPD. The main reason for supporting qualified exporters in accessing the German and European market is the high level sustainability of these tropical timber species. Frank Maul, Expert Sourcing & Purchase at IPD, states that “we are convinced that the preservation of tropical forests can only work if the still existing natural forests are being managed in a sustainable manner; and on the other hand, damaged areas are being reforested and thus can serve as a puffer zone.” The IPD brings together timber importers and Indonesian producers, closely coordinating with associations and initiatives of the timber sector.

BIOFACH: Import Promotion Desk brings organic products to Germany

From certification to market launch of organic products – the IPD supports companies from developing and emerging nations

Bonn, February 13, 2017 – „Organic – that is the sales argument on the market for natural ingredients companies from developing and emerging nations can profit from“, says Angie Martinez from the Import Promotion Desk (IPD). As a partner for import promotion, the IPD brings organic products from developing and emerging nations to Germany: at the BIOFACH trade fair in Nuremberg, companies from Egypt, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Peru and Tunisia will present their extensive portfolio of organic products. „Experience has shown that the demand for organic produce is on the rise in Germany and Europe. At the same time, there is a great deal of untapped potential in developing and emerging nations", comments Martinez. The IPD assists companies from these countries in tapping this potential, supports them throughout the certification process and connects suppliers from developing and emerging markets with German importers.

DOMOTEX 2017: IPD exporters successfully at the Innovations@DOMOTEX 2017

Bonn/Hannover, 19th January 2017 – The Peruvian wood processing companies, presented by the IPD, exhibited successfully their products at the DOMOTEX, the leading trade fair for floor covering in Hannover, and made numerous promising contacts with European importers.
Not only importers showed a deep interest in the wooden floors from Peru, but even the jury of the Innovations@DOMOTEX, which every year showcases the most creative products and design highlights, was enthusiastic about the innovative products.

The “Marine Floor” of Maderera Bozovich convinced thanks to its authentic look. The floor is laid by using a black sealant, which lends it the typical appearance of a ship`s deck. The tropical wood is 100% FSC-certified.
Pacific Wood brought the “Antique Rustique Decking” to the trade fair, a floor characterized by filled-in knots and unevenness that constitute the beauty of these used-look boards. The 100% FSC-certified tropical timber is processed entirely in Peru, securing jobs there.
Furthermore, the "Munay Deck" by Maderera Río Acre convinced the jury of the Innovations@DOMOTEX. These boards for outdoor use are composed from smallest battens of wood that normally end up as waste or are used as poor-quality cheap products. “Munay Deck” has a surface with interesting structure and convinces with the sustainability of the material.

Market potential for Kyrgyz goods

“Natural products from Central Asia” – this was the topic of the Kyrgyzstan Forum, to which invitations were issued by the IPD together with the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations and the Kyrgyz Chamber of Commerce and Industry within the context of Health Ingredients Europe.
The podium discussion focused on the potential of Kyrgyz goods and the outlook for trade relations with local companies. After the opening speech by Kyrgyz ambassador Erines Otorbaev, representatives of the German business community and Kyrgyz companies had an animated discussion on the opportunities for Kyrgyz products on the German and European markets. The natural origin of many Kyrgyz agricultural products was considered to be a positive distinction by the participants, since it brings major opportunities in the organic sector. However, many Kyrgyz producers still lack knowledge on how agricultural goods are certified and correctly documented – and this is exactly where the IPD provides support to the producers in the form of training courses and seminars. The Kyrgyz producers particularly appreciated the fact that since the beginning of 2016 the EU has accepted Kyrgyzstan into the EU GSP+ preferences system – a regulatory instrument granting preferential customs conditions for goods from developing countries. This means a complete suspension of customs duties for Kyrgyz goods, which will facilitate exports considerably.

Country pavilions from Kyrgyzstan and Tunisia for the first time

Kyrgyzstan and Tunisia attracted considerable attention at the Health Ingredients Europe exhibition in Frankfurt.
For the first time they were represented with their own country pavilions which the IPD had organised in collaboration with the export promotion organisations Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) in Kyrgyzstan, the Exports Department of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Economy and Agence de Promotion des Investissements Agricoles (APIA) in Tunisia. At Europe’s most important exhibition for natural and health ingredients, the Kyrgyz producers presented their high-quality products, such as beans, nuts, dried fruit, and berries. The Tunisians impressed buyers with organic quality vegetable oils and many products based on dates and prickly pears. Besides Kyrgyzstan and Tunisia, the IPD also brought three exporters from Nepal to the exhibition and the European buyers were particularly interested in Nepalese organic ginger and medicinal and aromatic plants from the Himalayas. The exporters proved very satisfied with the around 350 contacts which the IPD was able to broker over the course of the exhibition.

More about importing fruit

Introductory seminar from A to Z

Bonn, April 21, 2016 - Companies importing fruit and vegetables need to make sure of on-the-dot planning and targeted implementation. They also need to be familiar with numerous documents and formalities since that make this international trade challenging and potentially treacherous. For these reasons, the FrischeSeminar, the educational platform of the German Fruit Trade Association (DFHV e.V.), and the Import Promotion Desk invited to the introductory seminar “Fruit import from A to Z” on 19 April 2016 in Bonn.

As in the previous two years, employees and experts from quality management and assurance as well as purchasing received comprehensive information about importing fruit to Europe, in particular on topics such as quality assurance, procurement, financing and documentation.
Obtaining information about procedures and methods of customs matters and liability issues was rated by participants as very useful for their work.

Third round of practical workshop “European Timber Regulation (EUTR)”

Bonn/Stuttgart, April 20, 2016 - Three years after its introduction, many companies are familiar with the EU Timber Regulation. However, there are still uncertainties regarding its practical implementation. Many companies still ask questions such as:

•    What are the requirements for German companies?
•    Where can I find credible information?
•    What internal measures have to be taken?
•    How can we limit the risks?

In the last two years, the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) - together with Fairventures Worldwide (FVW) gGmbH – answered these questions successfully during workshops for numerous company representatives. Due to continuous demand, on the 14th of April 2016, IPD and FVW held another workshop in Stuttgart to convey comprehensive information on the EU Timber Regulation.

“Is the import of books affected by the EU Timber Regulation?” – Using this provocative question, Juliane Lemcke, IPD expert for technical wood, started the workshop. Hence, it was clear from the start how far the requirements of the EUTR can reach. While the complex regulation does not concern the import of printed products, it does affect the paper from which books are produced.

The EUTR affects many different areas which was also reflected by the mixed participant structure. For example, timber importers, representatives of certification companies, furniture producers and also retailers were provided with basic knowledge on the EU Timber Regulation. Familiarizing oneself with the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation, the most important aspects of the legal framework and the requirements of due diligence for German im-porters were focus points during the workshop. Furthermore, the participants learned how to put relevant supplier and product information together and where to find further information. During the workshop processes such as risk assessments, risk mitigation measures and how to embed due diligence in internal quality control system were discussed.

For further reading, Juliane recommended the EU Timber Regulation brochure, which IPD has produced in collaboration with Lemcke and various partners. The guide provides a concise overview of the legal obligations and provides assistance in the implementation.

BioFach: Organic walnuts from the jungle

The Import Promotion Desk (IPD), the import promotion service provider in Germany, presented organic walnuts  from Kyrgyzstan in Germany for the first time. The products presented at the BIOFACH trade fair in Nuremberg come from the largest natural walnut forest in the world. Due to the intensive insolation in the high-altitude forests the nuts have a richer taste than the Turkish walnuts usually available. The provider, the cooperative Bio Farmer, is Fairtrade and organicquality certified, i.e. uses neither fertiliser nor pesticides on their produce.

At the BIOFACH German importers were able to try out the nuts and convince themselves of their extraordinary characteristics. Of particular interest were the so-called butterflies – undamaged walnut halves that are, for instance, used for nut mixes. German chocolate manufacturers, too, were impressed by the taste and quality of the Kyrgyz walnuts. „With this kind of structured import promotion the IPD wants to facilitate access to the German market especially for sustainably producing suppliers“, says Dr. Julia Hoffmann, head of the IPD.

In addition to the walnuts from Kyrgyzstan the IPD showcased exhibitors of prickly pear seed oil from Tunisia, coconut sugar from Indonesia, essential oils, herbs and tea from Nepal, honey from Ethiopia and superfood powders made from quinoa, chia and maca from Peru.

Fruit Logistica: Intensified cooperation with Egypt

Bonn, February 16, 2016 – The Import Promotion Desk (IPD), the import promotion service provider in Germany, is expanding its cooperation with Egypt. To that purpose representatives of the IPD and the Egyptian Agricultural Export Council (AEC) signed a memorandum of understanding at the Fruit Logistica trade fair where Egypt participated as a partner country. Until 2018, the IPD will help Egyptian producers become ready for export. „With this agreement we want to promote sustainable and structured import from Egypt and strengthen the local private sector. Because successful import promotion benefits both importers and exporters“, says Dr. Julia Hoffmann , head of the IPD.

At the Fruit Logistica the IPD showcased two exhibitors from Egypt. One of them, the Egyptian Grower’s Organization (EGO), took part in the trade fair for the first time. An association of five agricultural businesses which farm in the country’s different climate zones, the EGO is able to offer single-source products such as fresh mangoes, pomegranates and grapes over an extended period of time. At the Fruit Logistica the group conducted several positive business talks including one that promises a business deal for mangoes.

First-ever Ethiopian country booth

The IPD also presented the world’s first Ethiopian country booth at a trade fair for fruit and vegetables. German companies were especially interested in the beans, chilies, strawberries, grapes and snow peas offered by the four Ethiopian exporters. Initial successful business talks were conducted by the Meki-Batu Union, the largest association of cooperatives in Ethiopia, which participated in the trade fair following an invitation by the IPD. The IPD exhibitor portfolio at the Fruit Logistica was complemented by Tunisia and Colombia.

Tunisian prickly pears in the focus of FiE 2015 in Paris

Bonn/Paris, December 2015 – Tunisian rarities such as prickly pear flour and prickly pear seed oil were presented by the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) on the Food Ingredients Europe (FiE) trade fair 2015 in Paris. From December 1 to December 3, the import promotion service provider presented suppliers of prickly pear products at its fair booth to the trading industry. The Tunisian product portfolio was complemented by producers of essential oils made from wildly harvested rosemary and myrrh.

For the first time the IPD introduced three carefully selected companies from Tunisia to the FIE, all of which were carefully selected and briefed for the European market. One of them was the exporter „Nopal Tunisie SA“, which offers a broad range of organically grown and certified products made from prickly pear. The extract made from pressed prickly pear fruit juice, for instance, makes for a natural red-to-violet food colouring for dairy products such as yoghurt or ice cream. A gluten-free flour obtained from prickly pear kernels is an excellent baking ingredient or sauce thickener.

The most exclusive product of the plant is prickly pear seed oil also offered by the manufacturer „Omega Tunisie“. The valuable oil is high in essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. Due to its versatility the plant is also called the „sultan of fruit” in Tunisia. „Our presentation of such exotic specialties in particular”, says Dr. Julia Hoffmann, head of the Import Promotion Desk, “gives interested importers the opportunity to expand their product portfolio.”

Anuga 2015: Import Promotion Desk (IPD) presents a range of new producers

Bonn/Cologne, October 15, 2015 – From raw sugar and fruit pulp to tea and spices – an extensive top-quality product portfolio from Colombia was presented at the 2015 Anuga trade fair by the Import Promotion Desk (IPD). Four manufacturers from the South American country gathered in Cologne between October 11 and 14 to present their products and establish direct contact to German companies with the support of the import promotion service provider. The supplier Agrícola Himalaya S.A., for instance, producer of the top-selling tea brand "Hindú", presented its latest product, "Bitaco®-Unique Colombian Tea", to the German market for the very first time.

Bitaco® is a highland tea grown in a unique region – the Colombian cloud forest. Thanks to the regions predominate micro-climate and the rich soil the tea blends sweet flavours such as honey with the tang of a light sea breeze. Consisting 100 % natural ingredients, the tea has both the EU organic farming label and the UTZ Certified label. „Through its participation at Anuga, the IPD wants to make access to new markets easier especially to sustainably producing suppliers such as Agrícola Himalaya S.A.“, says Dr. Julia Hoffmann, head of the Import Promotion Desk.

Guide to the EUTR – European timber regulation

With the entry into force of the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) in March 2013, a crucial step to combat global illegal logging was taken and thus public acceptability of wood as material from renewable resources was improved. The EUTR bans illegal timber in the EU and obliges anyone who places timber or timber products on the European market for the first time to assess the risk of those products coming from an illegal source and to reduce any identified risk.

Almond oil in Germany

Almond Oil is a niche market in Germany but the flavour is popular so there will be continuing interest in quality almond oils. It can be found in numerous market sectors and product applications. Its use has been driven by the increasing number of natural healthcare products and demand for healthy ingredients. DC exporters can find opportunities by keeping a close watch on the relevant growth sectors in which almond oil features and forming relationships with suppliers of related products.

Success Story

Legal and sustainable tropical timber from Peru

The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) and its partners in Peru support responsibly operating companies in their efforts to export certified timber products to Europe. An essential part of IPD’s work is to create awareness of European quality and sustainability standards in Peru’s private and public sectors. At the same time, the IPD provides German importers with an alternative buying market, which will allow them to optimise their purchasing activities and increase their product variety. In this way, international development cooperation and import promotion go hand in hand.

Almonds in Germany

Consumption of almonds has been increasing consistently since 2010 as consumers value their health benefits. They are increasingly using them as a snack as well as in more traditional food ingredients, including marzipan, which is especially popular in Germany. Almonds are the second most frequently consumed nuts after peanuts. While the USA remains the leading supplier of almonds to Germany, reduction in supplies from other important sources such as Spain, is providing opportunities for smaller DC suppliers such as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Iran.
