Ghana

More than just cocoa!

It is well known that Ghana is the world’s second largest cocoa producer. The country ensures the high quality of its cocoa beans through the national control of the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board. What is less well known is that through continual expansion of sustainable agriculture Ghana has also become an interesting procurement market for many other high-quality agricultural products.

The West African state offers a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, including exotic fruits like pineapples and mangos, and in particular native vegetables such as okra shoots and yams.

In the sector of natural ingredients, the range of medical and aromatic products is interesting for the European market, such as moringa from wild collection or baobabs, the superfood fruit of the baobab tree that is processed to a powder particularly rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

Ghana has also very successfully expanded its production of African cashews and now even offers cashew products in organic versions and with Fair Trade certification.

In addition Ghanaian traders offer a wide variety of dried fruits, fruit snacks and coconut products. For cosmetic manufacturers attractive products from Ghana are for instance cocoa butter and shea butter – which are used for instance in the production of natural skin and hair care products.

Ghana is considered an excellent example for the democratic development of an African country. The farming industry has been reformed and is a supporting pillar of the economy, employing around 45% of all workers. Ecological sustainability and the development of value-adding chains have made Ghana an interesting procurement market. An economic partnership agreement between Ghana and the EU facilitates international trade.

The IPD currently identifies reliable trade partners in Ghana whose products meet the quality criteria of the EU market.

In virtual meetings and trade fairs, IPD experts support German and European companies in opening up new supply markets and connect them with selected producers from developing countries and emerging nations.
