Ecuador

Premium natural products, experiencing nature sustainably

Natural ingredients, tropcal fruits
Ecuador is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity worldwide, and it is also home to a wide product range. Ecuadorean exporters offer exotic rarities such as pitahaya (dragon fruit), granadilla, or tamarillo (tree tomato or Dutch eggplant), and many more delicacies that are of interest for the EU market, such as maracuja, papaya, or passion fruit.

More than 3,000 species of medicinal and aromatic plants are to be found in the Amazon rainforest. This means that Ecuador has a broad spectrum of wild herbs, herbal extracts, essential oils, alternative sweeteners, and spices to offer.

The various climatic zones of the Andes and the fertile soil in the coastal region of Ecuador provide ideal conditions for the cultivation of a huge variety of agricultural produce – such as artichokes, peanuts and almonds, or natural ingredients such as cacao.

The production of organic foods is also clearly on the increase in Ecuador. Organic farming is pursued in 23 of the country’s 24 provinces. The Ecuadorean Ministry of Agriculture promotes organic production systems and the systematic improvement of export quality.

Technical Wood

Ecuadorian companies offer high-quality products made of bamboo or plantation teak such as garden furniture, deckings or flooring. Guadua bamboo is particularly strong and robust, supplying building materials for load-bearing structures.
IPD promotes small and medium-sized enterprises which add value by processing the timber and thus create employment for the local population. The IPD supports them in launching their products into the EU market.

Cut flowers

Ecuador is also known as the Rose Country. The climatic conditions let grow roses with strong, long stems and large flower heads. In addition to large-scale flower farms, especially small and medium-sized companies offer roses of outstanding quality.
IPD identifies reliable producers and supports them in introducing their products to the European market.

Sustainable tourism
Ecuador has a large variety of touristic attractions to offer nature lovers – walking and hiking tours in the breathtaking heights of the Andes, safaris in the Amazon jungle, or expeditions to the Galapagos Islands.

Tour operators selected by the IPD extend an invitation to discover the unique landscapes of Ecuador without putting the country’s nature at risk. Around 18 per cent of Ecuador’s land area is under conservation. The Galapagos Islands and the Sangay National Park are both UNESCO World Heritage natural sites. Sustainable tourism helps ensure that these natural heritage sites are not overstrained, and it helps preserve their biological diversity.

The IPD promotes sustainable tourism and mediates selected tour operators offering cultural and adventure travel in Ecuador to the European tourist industry. All providers have been carefully examined and have been trained on the requirements of the EU travel market.

Cultural and adventure travel IN ECUADOR

Sustainable tourism offers:

  • Cultural experience trips in the Ecuadorean cloud forest, living amongst the indigenous population and sharing in their everyday life: from milking cows to coffee production
  • Language trips with accommodation in the historic centre of Cuenca: learning Spanish in a World Cultural Heritage site
  • Individual travel offers to the natural landscapes in the Amazon region, e.g. individual wheelchair tours

Preparing for a new start in tourism

The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) is supporting the Ministry of Tourism in Ecuador (MINTUR) as it prepares to
relaunch tourism in the country. In conjunction with the consulting firm Hotel Resilient, which specialises in risk and
crisis management, the health and hygiene concepts for the tourism sector have been adapted to internationally
valid standards and a concept for hygiene and safety training has been developed. In the first three months, more than
400 Ecuadorian tourism professionals have already been trained; an e-learning program has also been launched.
