Colombia

Products as exotic as the country

Colombia has more to offer than just coffee. The country has great potential in the fruit sector, especially in regard to exotic varieties which are becoming more and more popular in Europe. Many exporters hold certification such as GLOBALG.A.P., HACCP, UTZ and Fair Trade.

Thanks to its rich plant diversity Colombia can offer European importers an extraordinary and often unique range of new ingredients.

In addition, Colombia offers both teak- and bamboo timber. Exporters supply garden furniture or flooring made out of plantation grown teak. The Colombian Guadua Bamboo is known for its strength and robustness, serving as building material for load-bearing constructions. As an impressive example, the ZERI Pavilion on the Expo 2000 in Hannover was built with stems from the Guadua Angustifolia. A total surface of 2000 m² makes it one of the largest bamboo constructions worldwide.

In Colombia the IPD matches you with exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables and of the natural ingredients sector and maintains contacts with reliable exporters of the timber products.

The Import Promotion Desk brings exporters from seven developing and emerging countries to the international trade fair for fruit and vegetables.

Bonn/Berlin, 21.01.2019 – Strawberries and blueberries are highlights at the country stand of Ethiopia (Stand 26 | F‐28) at this year's Fruit Logistica, which takes place from 6 to 8 February 2019 in Berlin. The exhibitors from Ethiopia bring a wide range of berries to the fair, including San Andreas, Sweet Ann and Montery Strawberries. Due to the climate conditions, berries in Ethiopia can be cultivated in Ethiopia all year round in high quality. Other products such as beans, physalis, prickly pears and sugar snap are also exhibited by the companies from the African hinterland at the Ethiopian Horticulture Producers Exporters Association (EHPEA) stand, organized with the support of the Import Promotion Desk (IPD). The German partner for import promotion also presents exporters from Egypt, Ecuador, Colombia, Mozambique, Peru and Tunisia and a wide range of regional products.

Exotic resources for new taste sensations

The Frankfurt-based company tropextrakt specialises in importing exotic resources for the food sector. Since its foundation in 2002, the enterprise has established its reputation with the introduction of exotic niche products. tropextrakt supplies the big players of the sector with trend-setting fruit and plant products from tropical countries. The company’s success is due to the on-going search for reliable suppliers of high-quality products that meet the superior requirements of German and European clients. To that end tropextrakt has established a solid network of exporters in various countries, especially in South America, in recent years. The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) has now been able to furnish tropextrakt with another valuable contact by introducing the Frankfurt-based company to a highly eligible partner at the SIAL 2014 trade fair: Frugy from Colombia.

Success Story

Organic tea from Colombia

Many high-quality products from developing and emerging countries are in great demand on the German and European markets, but importers face major obstacles when it comes to market introduction. Inadequate knowledge of the market and lack of contacts to European trading partners impede their access to the EU market. The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) helps exporters overcome these obstacles. For the Colombian export company Agrícola Himalaya S.A. the IPD has provided comprehensive advice on marketing their high-quality organically grown teas and helped in successfully matchmaking the Columbian enterprise with German importer J.T. Ronnefeldt KG.
